Until 1987 there was practically no contemporary carpet design in Spain or the world. Carpets were mostly made following traditions developed over previous centuries. Nani Marquina changed that when she established a contemporary carpet manufacturing company after finishing her industrial design studies. A blast of ideas and their unusual application started a revolution in the existing carpet industry. The form, structure and message of Marquina carpets was unprecedented. Polyester fibres, recycled rubber, felt next to silk and jute did not leave anyone indifferent. ‘Nothing is more important than creating carpets for people to enjoy’, emphasizes Marquina.
